Relationship Between the Medium of  Digital Photographic Prints and Art

When an artist creates a painting using oil or acrylic paint we have no compunction in accepting that the work as experienced is art and not a reproduction. Unless, of course it is a reproduction of a painting - a print. However, the print exists in its own right and has special qualitiesof its own, e.g. an etching. . An etching should be printed on very high quality paper, nothing else will do. Similarly, the digital print when presented as a work of art is dependant upon not only the paper, but also the final proof - its dimensions and resolution. I have determined for my own work that if I decide that a print should be of a certain size then all the artifacts that are part of that image as it is printed is what the artist intends. Grain or other artifacts are part of the artist's intention. when such a print is viewed every element of the print is part of the artist's intention. these prints are the art work. An appropriate paper or other medium will be selected for each image in order to provide the optimium product. My publisher will print, pack and deliver your print, surprisingly the packing and delivery cost component is a significant proportion of the cost. however this does ensure that your purchase will arrive in perfect conditon.

Website Reproduction and Prints

The most common display size is 1024 x 768. Digital images have been reproduced to fit on the standard display which is also in the ratio of width to height of 4:3 the standard televison screen. As this will effect the reproduction of many images created by the artist (as most images will need to be reduced to fit the display) an additional image showing part of the original has also been added to the web at its full size reproduction. Sometimes a hot link on the reproduced image will open a full size detail on a new page.  The user's display should ideally be adjusted to display favourite photographs accurately. The display should be viewed with low ambient light, otherwise the contrast will be poor.

On a Windows PC the user may obtain a better display of artwork if toolbars and menus are reduced to the minimum. The F11 function key can be untilised to provide a full screen display of the artwork. The supplier of our prints will only use the finest materials and will print on archive paper or canvas. I will ensure that the artwork that you have selected is printed on the most appropriate materials.

Individual Artists

Individual artists may prefer other arrangements for displaying their work. Preparation of a suitable image of the artwork for display on the web and an appropriate detail of the artwork is quite time intensive. Each artist may have their own sub-domain of Abstract Artists in the form: artistsname.abstract-artists.com (the domain abstract-artists.co.uk has web forwarding so either the dot com or dot co.uk URL may be used) These sub-domains will be managed either by Geoff Edwards or any other employee of Xyzweb Limited or by the artists themselves. A visitor to Abstract-Artists will be able to view a thumbnail selection from the  portfolio of each artist's work. The artists own space can then be accessed.

Copyright

It is not necessary to claim copyright by marking work. Copyright is automatically given to all images and text that are published on this web or elsewhere. My view is that most of my own work will be marked with a copyright symbol but the supplied artwork will only be marked with a discrete signature.
